Quick Overview

A bill of lading, commonly abbreviated as B/L, is a shipping document issued by a carrier or its authorized agent after cargo is received for transportation.

It normally identifies the parties, cargo, transport route and shipment details. It serves as a receipt for the goods and evidence of the contract of carriage. Depending on its type and terms, a negotiable bill of lading may also function as a document of title.

“What is a bill of lading, and why is it important?

A bill of lading, or B/L, is a key ocean-freight document issued by the carrier after receiving cargo for transportation. It normally records details including:

Shipper and consignee.

Cargo description.

Package quantity.

Origin and destination.

Vessel and voyage information.

A bill of lading serves as a receipt for the goods and evidence of the transport contract. Certain negotiable bills of lading can also function as documents of title—but not every bill of lading is negotiable.

Check all information carefully before issuance. Incorrect cargo, party or destination details can delay documentation, customs clearance or cargo release.”
