Calculate Your LCL Shipping Cost

LCL shipping allows your cargo to share container space with shipments from other customers. Instead of paying for an entire container, you pay for the space your goods occupy and the services required to move them. Enter the following details into the calculator:

  • Origin and destination
  • Port-to-port or door service
  • Number of packages or pallets
  • Cargo dimensions
  • Total volume in cubic meters
  • Gross weight
  • Cargo type
  • Preferred departure date

How the LCL Shipping Calculator Works

  • Enter your route: Select the cargo’s origin and destination. Depending on the route, you may be able to include pickup, customs and delivery services.
  • Add your cargo details: Provide the number of packages, dimensions, volume and total weight. Accurate information helps prevent pricing changes after the shipment is measured.
  • Compare available services: Review available LCL shipping rates, routes and estimated transit times.
  • Select additional services: Add services such as cargo pickup, destination delivery or customs clearance where available.
  • Complete your booking: Select the preferred option and provide the shipment and documentation details needed to proceed.

What Determines LCL Shipping Costs?

LCL freight is generally calculated according to the shipment’s chargeable volume or weight, together with route-specific origin and destination costs.

Pricing factorHow it affects the LCL rate
Cargo volumeLCL cargo is commonly priced according to cubic meters
Gross weightDense or heavy cargo may be subject to weight-based calculations
Origin and destinationRates vary by port pair, inland location and available services
Pickup and deliveryDoor services add inland transportation costs
ConsolidationCargo must be received, grouped and loaded at the origin facility
DeconsolidationThe shared container must be unloaded and separated at destination
Terminal handlingOrigin and destination terminals may apply handling charges
DocumentationShipping and customs documents may carry separate fees
Customs servicesClearance costs depend on the destination and cargo
SurchargesFuel, security, congestion or seasonal surcharges may apply

The calculated shipping price does not normally include import duties, taxes, inspection charges or costs caused by inaccurate cargo information.

When Should You Use LCL Shipping?

LCL shipping is generally suitable when:

  • Your cargo does not fill an entire container
  • You are shipping cartons, crates or pallets
  • You want to pay for the space used rather than a complete container
  • Your shipment schedule allows time for consolidation and deconsolidation
  • You ship smaller quantities more frequently
  • Air freight is too expensive for the cargo volume

LCL is commonly considered for shipments below approximately 15 CBM, but volume alone should not determine the final choice. Cargo value, weight, handling requirements, route and local charges can make FCL more suitable at a lower volume.

Use the LCL versus FCL guide to compare both options.

What Is Included in an LCL Quote?

The services included depend on the route and options selected. An LCL quote may include:

  • Cargo collection
  • Origin warehouse receiving
  • Consolidation
  • Export handling
  • Ocean freight
  • Terminal handling
  • Deconsolidation
  • Customs clearance
  • Destination delivery
  • Shipping documentation

Review the cost breakdown carefully to understand which origin, freight and destination charges are included.

Prepare Accurate Cargo Details

LCL shipments are weighed and measured when received at the consolidation warehouse. If the actual dimensions or weight differ from the information submitted, the final shipping price may change.

Before calculating your rate:

  • Measure the cargo after it has been packed
  • Include pallets, crates and protective packaging
  • Provide the gross weight
  • Confirm whether pallets are stackable
  • Identify fragile, oversized or hazardous cargo
  • Use treated wooden packaging where required
  • Check whether the goods have special handling restrictions

Read the guide on how to prepare an LCL shipment before delivering cargo to the warehouse.

LCL Shipping and Customs Clearance

LCL cargo must comply with the export and import requirements that apply to the product and destination. Common documents include:

  • Commercial invoice
  • Packing list
  • Bill of lading
  • Export declaration, where required
  • Import licenses or certificates for controlled goods
  • Certificate of origin, where applicable

Import duties and taxes are assessed separately from the freight price. Requirements vary according to the product, declared value, origin and destination.

Review the customs clearance process before confirming an international shipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is an LCL shipping rate calculated?

LCL rates are normally based on the space occupied by the cargo, measured in cubic meters, or its chargeable weight. Origin handling, consolidation, ocean freight, destination handling and optional inland services can also affect the total.

Is LCL cheaper than FCL?

LCL can be cheaper for smaller shipments because you pay only for part of the container. As shipment volume increases, FCL may provide a lower overall or per-CBM cost. Compare both options when your cargo approaches the LCL-to-FCL crossover range.

Does the calculator include customs duties?

No. Customs duties, import taxes and cargo inspection costs are generally determined by customs authorities and are separate from the freight rate.

Can I calculate LCL rates for door-to-door shipping?

Door services may be available depending on the origin and destination. Enter the pickup and delivery locations to check the services available for the route.

What happens if my cargo dimensions are incorrect?

The consolidation warehouse will measure and weigh the shipment. If the actual volume or weight is higher than declared, the rate may be adjusted before the cargo is shipped.
