This 30-second guide explains bobtailing—when a semi-truck tractor travels without a trailer or container chassis attached.

A bobtail tractor may be heading to collect a trailer or returning after completing a drop-off.

It differs from a tractor pulling an empty trailer: both vehicles may be carrying no cargo, but only the tractor operating without a trailer is bobtailing.

Without the weight of a trailer, the tractor’s weight distribution, braking and handling can change.

Drivers must adjust their driving and take extra care on the road.”

Bobtailing vs. Pulling an Empty Trailer

A bobtail tractor has no trailer or chassis connected. By comparison, a tractor pulling an empty trailer still has a trailer attached even though it is not carrying cargo. This second situation is commonly called deadheading.
