To track a container on a shipping line’s website, identify the carrier handling the ocean leg, open its official tracking tool and enter a reference that tool accepts. A container number, carrier booking number and ocean bill of lading number identify different things. Keep the latest event time and estimated arrival date together when reviewing a result.

Booked through iContainers? Open your shipment in iContainers Track & Trace for the available booking updates. This guide explains how to use a shipping line’s own tool, including when the shipment was booked elsewhere.

Choose the right tracking reference

ReferenceWhere to find itWhat to check
Container numberContainer doors, booking documents or shipment detailsUsually four letters followed by seven digits. Copy the complete number, including the final check digit.
Carrier booking numberBooking confirmation from the shipping line or forwarderUse the carrier’s reference where requested; your forwarder’s internal job number may be different.
Ocean bill of lading numberCarrier bill of lading or shipping documentsCheck whether the number is a master bill of lading issued by the ocean carrier or a house bill issued by a forwarder. A carrier tool may not recognize the house number.

The container identification format comprises a three-letter owner prefix, one equipment-category letter, a six-digit serial number and a check digit. The carrier’s accepted booking and document references vary by tool.

Open the shipping line’s tracking page

First confirm the ocean carrier named on your booking or master bill of lading. These are examples of official carrier tools, not a complete list of shipping lines:

MaerskMaersk trackingMaersk instructs users to enter a shipment or container number.
MSCMSC Track & TraceMSC describes searches by container, bill of lading or booking number.
Hapag-LloydHapag-Lloyd trackingIts tracking information describes container and booking searches; check the options currently shown on the tool.
CMA CGMCMA CGM shipment trackingSelect the reference type offered by the current search form.

Carrier interfaces and available details can change. Some advanced visibility features require an account or an additional service; a standard milestone search should not be described as continuous GPS tracking.

Read the result before acting on it

  1. Check the latest reported event and its date. “Loaded” and “vessel departed” describe different stages. If the last event is old, check whether the ETA or vessel schedule has changed.
  2. Check the shipment and location. Confirm that the container, route and port match your documents, particularly if you manage several shipments.
  3. Treat ETA as an estimate. Vessel arrival or container discharge does not, by itself, confirm customs clearance, cargo release or readiness for pickup.
  4. Confirm the next action with the responsible party. For a US import, coordinate the applicable customs and delivery steps with your broker, forwarder or carrier. The carrier’s movement record alone does not complete them.

Example: A result says a container was discharged at a US port yesterday. You can use that event to update your receiving plan, but ask the responsible parties whether the cargo has been released and when it can be collected before dispatching a truck.

If the search returns no shipment

  • Recheck the shipping line and copy the reference directly from the booking or document.
  • Try another reference type accepted by that carrier. A house bill number or your own purchase-order number may not work in a carrier search.
  • If the booking is recent, ask the booking party when the carrier expects a searchable record.
  • For an LCL shipment, ask the forwarder or consolidator for cargo-level updates. Tracking the shared container does not necessarily show when your individual consignment is unpacked or available.
  • If the reference matches but a milestone is missing or stale, contact the party that arranged the shipment with the reference and the last event shown.

For an iContainers booking, use Track & Trace and contact your iContainers team if an update needs investigation.
