To check TARIC measures for goods imported into Spain, identify the product accurately and search the official EU tool using the relevant goods code, origin and reference date. Review the measures and conditions shown for that operation. Check Spanish import taxes separately; the EU TARIC database does not provide national VAT or excise rates.
This is a guide to performing a lookup for a shipment. For an explanation of how HS and TARIC codes are structured, use the HS codes guide.
| Detail | What to prepare |
|---|---|
| Product | Technical description, composition and information needed to distinguish it from similar goods. |
| Classification | The relevant EU goods code, or a known heading from which to explore the nomenclature. |
| Origin | The origin relevant to the measure being checked, which may differ from the country of dispatch. |
| Reference date | The date for which you want to view the applicable measures. |
If the product classification remains uncertain, resolve it before relying on a duty estimate. Spain’s Tax Agency explains tariff classification and provides a route to apply for binding tariff information.
Go to the European Commission’s TARIC consultation. Its search provides fields for the goods code and origin/destination, a nomenclature browser and a measures result.
Enter the code in “Goods code” and use “Browse the Nomenclature” to inspect the description and any relevant subdivision. If you only have a shorter code, continue through the nomenclature to the description that matches the actual product. Do not invent the remaining digits.
The tool warns if a goods code is invalid for the selected reference date. Recheck the classification rather than carrying an old code into a new declaration.
For an EU import, select the goods’ origin in “Origin/destination” and review the reference date. The official help explains that the results are returned for the date selected. Recheck a planned future shipment before the declaration is made, because the tool warns that future-date information may be incomplete.
Select “Retrieve Measures” and expand the relevant goods code. Review any applicable third-country duty, preference, quota, trade defence measure, restriction, document condition or supplementary unit.
A displayed preferential measure is a prompt to check eligibility, not proof that the shipment qualifies. Ask your customs representative which origin rules and evidence apply before claiming a preference. The Commission describes both the range of TARIC measures and the need for appropriate proof of preferential origin.
A Barcelona business is planning to import roasted coffee beans that are not decaffeinated and have no added ingredients, with Colombia identified as the origin for this example. The Spanish HS classification guide uses HS 0901.21 and CN 0901 21 00 as the starting classification for the product described. This walkthrough does not assert a final TARIC code, a duty rate or eligibility for a preference. Those must be checked for the actual goods and relevant date.
| Field or result | Action in this example |
|---|---|
| Goods code | Start from 0901 21 00; inspect the applicable description and subdivision. |
| Origin/destination | Select Colombia for the example goods. |
| Reference date | Choose the date relevant to the planned operation. |
| Measures | Open the import results and record the conditions displayed. |
| Follow-up | Have the classification, origin claim and any relevant control or preference checked before declaring. |
Decaffeinated, soluble or blended coffee would require a fresh classification review. A shipping route through another country does not, by itself, settle the goods’ customs origin.
Save the product description, code and description selected, origin, reference date, measures reviewed and any outstanding questions. Give that record to the person preparing the import declaration.
The EU TARIC database does not include national VAT or excise rates. Check Spanish taxes separately and use the Spanish landed cost calculator to organize an estimate.
